Severe Groin Pain, Spreading To Buttocks, Hip. Taking Anti-inflammatory Drugs, No Relief. Suggestions?

I have had severe groin pain for about six months now, it s starting to go into my buttock and hip. It s only on my right side . I am taking an anti inflammatory , but even that does not dull the pain. I m finally scheduled for an MRI next week. At first I thought I had just pulled a muscle but the groin pain never went away. Any thoughts about this?

Hi,

I am Dr Mbong. The symptoms you described seem not to be an ordinary groin pain but a sciatic pain from probable lumbar spine disc hernia/prolapse. This is more probable especially if you tripped before the pain started or during an effort. If the pain worsens when you cough, sneeze, or do anything else that increases the intr-abdominal pressure, then a disc prolapse/herniation is very likely.

It can also be a right kidney stones or a strangulating right groin hernia. An MRI (which i hope you get to do as soon as possible) will tell us better which is the most likely diagnosis.

If you are not relieved by anti-inflammatory pain killers, you will need to ask your physician to prescribe a stronger pain killer like an opoid derivative.

Wish you the best and quick recovery,

Dr Mbong
