Severe Pain In Elbow Becoming Frozen, Unable To Straighten The Hand. History Of Fracture In Elbow, Advised To Give More Strain To Elbow. Suggest

I fell about three weeks ago & did not realize I had fractured my elbow! I started to have pain & went to an Orthopedic Dr. He took X-rays & they showed a fracture! His remedy was for me to go home & work the heck out of my elbow! Well I have tried to follow his instructions & now the pain is worse than ever! My question is should I continue to do this or let the fracture heal? I think he was concerned about the elbow becoming frozen which has already happened some! I can't straighten it all the way out!! What can I do to help the fracture?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
If there is a fracture & it happened less then a month ago then you should do rest & wear a protective splint. I will advice you to give rest to your elbow followed by good physiotherapy under guidance of an expert physiotherapist.

Hope this will help you.

With best wishes.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Propably you could have sustained an INTRA ARTICULAR (within the joint) fracture which could be the cause of your limitation of elbow joint movement.

Physiotherapy is necessary to prevent further worsening of your elbow stiffness.

Initial treatment consists of rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE), which is continued for 1–3 weeks depending on the severity of the injury and the response to treatment. Cold compresses should be applied for about 20 minutes every 2 hours, and after any activity that exacerbates the symptoms. Take daily calcium supplements to hasten the bone healing.

Hope this information is helpful.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello and Welcome to HCM,
Thanks for writing to us.
Elbow stiffness is very common after having intraarticular fracture. As three weeks are already assed out, you need physiotheray exercises to reduce the stiffness. You can take calcium suplements and diet rich in calcim and vit d3 to hasten the healing process.
Hope this helps you.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.
