Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m a 13 year old female and have been experiencing excruciating pain in my elbow for over a year. It first started during last year s softball season. I am a catcher. After the season ended, the pain did as well. I continued throughout the year to compete in several athletics. I am an avid athlete, and I only feel this pain during softball. If I continue to be active when the pain begins, it goes away, but if i continue to participate, it intensifies to the point where I cannot bend my arm without excruciating, almost crippling pain. Please help.
it's difficult to make a diagnosis without knowing exactly where in the elbow you are feeling the pain. it's not normal for a 13 year old to have elbow pain and so I would encourage you to see your dr and get an X-ray. this could simply be an insertional tendinitis such as golfers or tennis elbow but there are other problems that affect children's elbows that could only be diagnosed with further tests, for example osteochondritis dessican's.
if you look up tennis and golfers elbow on the internet and feel that your symptoms and the location of your pain is appropriate for these diagnosis then rest and antinflammatory medication can help. physiotherapy with modalities such as ultrasound can also be of benefit.
