Severe Pain In Lower Back And Abdomen After Coming Off Metformin. Are They Withdrawal Symptoms?

I just came off metformin. Since then In two occassions I had serious lower back pain and sometimes abdominal pain associated with it. It lasted for over 2 weeks each time. Doctor treated me for kidney infection, ecolai etc. I wonder could it be the withdrawal effect of metformin. Few years back my doctor told me that I have PCOS and I had menstrual issue. You sucker!! I'll pay to a live doctor.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Metformin withdrawal has nothing to do with your problems, which were apparently due to E.coli infection.

PCOS is commonly associated with diabetes and should therefore not to be neglected. You were apprised of it several years back. I would therefore advise you to get the tests for PCOS done again to confirm/rule out the diagnosis. If PCOS is confirmed, you are likely to have additional complications in the management of diabetes.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me and will prescribe the advised drugs in appropriate doses.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
