Should I Be Worried For Small Food Pipe In Infant?

Hi. My son is 3 months old. Right from the birth he couldn t take feed properly. One sort of sound is coming. I asked my doctor she said his food pipe is small n it will be okay after 6 months. Is it a normal situation or should I specialist. He takes only breast feed.I m much worried abt this . Pls help me doctor.

Hi...the sort of sound you are hearing could be because the wind pipe of your son is lax. It is physiological in this age and usually starts to get better by 6molnths and some times it can take 1.5 to 2.5 years also. It is not the food pipe but the wind pipe.
Unless the kid is not gaining weight appropriately and having recurrent hospitalizations with respiratory illnesses, you need not worry. he will not need any further evaluation.

Hi....sound coming during feeding is not from the food pipe but from the wind pipe. This is called congenital airway anomaly or laryngomalacia and I would say that your doctor is right. This is going to get better after 6 months. Nothing to worry about it. I suggest exclusive breast feeding till 6 months of age.
