Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes thank you. I am 54 and have recently been having symptoms of high BP (first thought to be altitude illness and was put on 10 mg Lisinopril temporarily for 30 days one year ago and resolved). However, I recently have had BP problems and made an ER visit. Although I checked out okay I have concerns. I was diagnosed with hypothryroid and have been on 100mcg levothryroxine for 2 years with good blood work results. The ER doctor prescribed Lisinopril 5mg but sometimes my BP does not come down enough for relief of symptoms. Unfortunately, I am without health insurance benefits due to my husbands injury/disability. He is recuperating from surgery that caused delays for us to return where I was in process of trying to obtain insurance. Is there any advice you can give, and how BP relates to Hypothyroid? My prescription is soon to run out and I truly believe I should be on 10 mcg lisinopril to better manage and control my hypertension..
Hi welcome to HCM. You seem to have high blood pressure due to your age known as primary or essential hypertension. This develops in many people due to inherent defect in BP controlling mechanisms.Such people are always adviced to take antihypertensive drugs like lisinopril at a relatively fixed dose on a lifelong basis.Sudden stoppage of such drugs are known to cause BP fluctuations.Hypothyroid state can indirectly contribute to BP fluctuations by causing low blood pressure initially falsely assuring the patient.Monitor your BP regularly and use 10mg lisinopril once or twice daily to control your BP.Consult your cardiologist for further queries. Thank you
