Should I Go For Abdominal Sacrocolpopexy With Syvocervical Hysterectomy And Possible Anterior Repair Or Vaginal Hysterectomy With Anterior Repair?

I am having surgery next month but need to decide between two options. I have pelvic prolapse. My choices are Abdominal Sacrocolpopexy with syvocervical hysterectomy and possible anterior repair or Vaginal hysterectomy with anterior repair. I am very anxious and scared and I want to to do what is best for me with the least percentage of possible problems such as incontinence, infection, future surgery etc. I am 64 years old, have been healthy my entire life, am not overweight and have never smoked. I recently and suddenly lost my husband to a massive heart attack, and I need to continue to work . I will go to a pre-op appointment next week. any advice?

Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

I would ask your doctor about the less invasive approach of:
1. Vaginal hysterectomy
2. Anterior and posterior repair
3. Uterosacral ligament suspension

This is a more traditional approach associated with less blood loss and a more physiologically normal repair. It may be that they are more experienced with the other approach, but I would bring this up as a viable alternative that may work better for you. Also, if you have ANY leaking of urine with coughing / sneezing, this should not be ignored (usually treated with a sling procedure).

I hope that this helps!
