Should I Start Levaxin Or Try Ayurvedic Treatment For Chronic Thyroiditis And Subclinical Hypothyroidism?

Hello, I am diagnosed with chronic thyroiditis, subclinical hypothyroidism and chronic fatigue syndrome. My TSH is 7, thyroid gland produced enough hormones until now. Do I need to begin Levaxin or can try ayurvedic treatments. Did hear that they give good results. Thanks

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

There are two schools of thought :

1. To start with Synthroid (Levothyroxine) in low doses (12.5-25mcg/day) when TSH is between 5-10.

2. Other group of doctors recommend initiation of the hormone only when TSH goes above 10.

I personally am of the firm opinion that Synthroid should be started when TSH is >5. A timely hormonal replacement therapy will spare the patient from the troublesome symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Hence, I will recommend that you start with 12.5mcg/day of Synthroid immediately. The dose needs to be titrated, so as to maintain TSH around 1.0

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me and will prescribe the advised drugs in appropriate doses.

AYURVEDIC drugs are made from herbs/shrubs, which DO NOT CONTAIN hormones. Hence, Ayurvedic treatment will be INEFFECTIVE.
