good morning sir.I am pregnant with 8th month running. 15 days ago, i made GTT test with 75gms of glucose. fasting-97, 1st hour-180,2nd hour-150,3rd hour-97. Now 3 days ago i made fasting test with 86 and after breakfast -137. My doctor suggested me to take insulin of 4units thrice a day. According to him, if pp is in 120, the baby be in safe side. Suggest me that can i take insulin.
Hi, I have gone through your question. The GTT you have mentioned is having only fasting value deranged, rest 3 values are normal. With GTT deranged, you have gestational diabetes mellitus. The first step of treatment is to start you on diabetic diet according to your weight, and repeat the 6 sample blood sugar profile (fasting, 2 hr postbreakfast, prelunch, 2 hr postlunch, predinner, 2 hr postdinner) after 2 weeks of diabetic diet. If the blood sugar profile shows fasting value >90 mg/dl, post meals value >120 mg/dl, pre meals value >100 mg/dl, then you need to be started on insulin according to the sugar values. Insulin is not started directly in gestational diabetes mellitus, as it may cause low glucose levels and sudden fetal death. Hope this answers your question. Wishing you good health.
