Should The Thyroid Medicine Be Continued After Thyroid Levels Come To Normal?

Hi, I'm 28 years old and was admitted in the ICU 9 months ago due to pp sugar level of 600... After discharge, I have been on insulin (lantus) & pills twice a day, apart from thyroxin medicine (100)... I somehow couldnt Take this mess anymore and started a strict diet of vegetables and fruits along with exercise 3 times a week and sports on the weekend. I also stopped all rice and sugar containing items. At this point(a month ago), I also discontinued insulin & meds... I have been free of meds for over a month & have been testing my sugar levels - they range between 100 - 140 on most days (once or twice touched 160)... My question is, am I cured now because the tests indicate normal levels. Also, do I need to continue thyroid meds?

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM! I have gone carefully through your concern.
Congratulations for the will you have showed and the improvement of blood glucose levels.
Type 2 Diabetes in most cases is caused by obesity and loosing weight is the best treatment as you have noticed. To judge better about the blood sugar levels helps the test called HbA1c or Glycated Hemoglobin. It should be done every 3 months.
It shows the mean glucose values of the last three months and should be maintained under 6.5%.
Different from Diabetes, underactive thyroid is a chronic disease of autoimmune origin in most of the cases and the treatment is longlife, it does not depend on diet.
Hope i have clarified your queries.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
