Shoulder Bone Dislocated, Operated Screw Inserted, Suggested To Remove Screw. Necessary?

I had an accident and shoulder bone got dislocated, not fractured as a result I went through operation and doctors have putted screw to bring down shoulder upper bone. Now after 2 months they are asking to remove that screw as per their knowledge it will be difficult to remove if kept for long time and there is chances of screw broken down.

I consult other doctors before under going operation they told screw will be there atleast for 1 year but doctor who has done surgery is saying we can remove the screw

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Let me make it clear for you.

If you have not fractured your shoulder and it is only a pure dislocation, there is no need to put in a screw. So, the fact that screw is put indicates that there could be an element of a fracture.

I suspect that it could be your Acromioclavicular dislocation (and not shoulder dislocation) for which a screw might have been inserted into the coracoid bone so as to reduce the dislocation.

Generally, in the upper limbs, implants (screws or plates) will be removed between 6 -12 months period after surgery depending on the need and necessity.

Screws may break when they are placed in weight bearing areas as in case of lower limbs but its very rare in upper limbs, though there is a possibility. And broken screws are really difficult to remove.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
