Slight Fracture On Wrist, Swelling In Eye, Phlegm, Red Clogs Of Blood. Is It An Issue Of Brain?

Hi, last Sunday which was two days ago, my mum aged 56 this year, fell down on a wet, concrete-step. She fell lying side-ways. Hit her cheek-bone, slight fracture on her wrist. Her eyes were immediately swollen after the fall. Went to the hospital and get immediate treatment for her hand.

However, starting with a spit of phlegm with dark red clog blood and after the first spit, bright red blood(few drops) will come along whenever she spit her phlegm. Her hand surgeon told us her swollen face is nothing vital (not knowing about the blood-spitting) but if we were still concern he can recommend us a brain specialist. Please advice if we should go to any brain specialist. The fees solely for the hand surgeon were already a lot to bare by a low-income kid like me. Hoping for a better advice if brain specialist is needed.

Concerned daughter.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query. It is nice to see your concern about your mom's health.

No. I do not think there is any need to go for a brain specialist (Neuro surgeon/nerologist) for spitting of blood with the phlegm. This could be due to some intra oral injury or intra nasal injury along with the injury to the face resulting in the swelling of face. If it is a small bleed, it will subside of its own. However, if it increases or persist, then I would advise you to show her to a ENT specialist. The question of neurologist/neurosurgeon comes only when there is any altered level of consciousness in your mother, and in that case she has to be taken to an ER of the nearest hospital.

I hope I have answered your query. Thanks for choosing the healthcaremagic forum for questions related to your health. Wishing your mother an early and uneventful recovery. Dr Shareef.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The source of blood while spitting could be from the oral cavity or from the tracheobronchial tree. So, you need to visit a General physician to know the cause of spitting of blood. No need to see a Neurosurgeon for this complaint.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
