Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Small Child, Sounds Extremely Hoarse And Raspy, Grunting Frequently, Throat Pain, Wheezing. Treatment?
My 8 month old daughter sounds hoarse, raspy. It started the night before, she s very vocal. Not in the crying sense, she talks and grunts a lot. By this afternoon it had worsened but no fever and she ate reg all day besides dinner, almost seemed as if her thrat bothered her. Her breathing sounds more like a wheeze than a phelm.
My humble suggestion is to have her seen by your Pediatrician immediately.
Since your baby is very young, she can get into complications soon.
It might just be a nasal block or wheeze producing the noise. Or it might be due to inflammation of the voice box or larynx- that can happen in various viral infections. Or it might be due to a bit serious condition called croup.
So she has to be examined thoroughly (throat and chest) and treated accordingly.
Hope my answer helps you.
Wish your little one good health.
Hello dear...
Wheezing is caused due to broncho-constriction (obstruction of smaller airway passages) which is indicative of Hyper-responsiveness of air passages to an allergen.
Management includes Nebulization using a broncho-dilator to provide symptomatic relief by causing broncho-dilation (dilating the smaller airway passages, relieving the obstruction & increasing airflow to lungs)
Other causes of hoarseness of voice includes:
1. Vocal nodules- seen in very vocal children
2. Reflux laryngitis
3. Vocal cord edema
So...it will be better to consult a Pediatrician & get a local examination of throat done to identify the exact cause.
Wishing your daughter a speedy recovery.
Let me know if I need to clarify further.
Thanks & take care.
Hi,
Thank you for your query,
Your child seems to have upper respiratory tract infection looking like laryngotracheobronchitis as she is having hoarse, raspy sounds, grunt and wheezing like sounds.
Because of their narrow airways they will be in discomfort while taking breathing and will develop respiratory distress.
Consult your Pediatrician as early as possible for the examination of her respiratory system, and for specific treatment.
Hope I have answered your query.
