Hi, My baby has been diagnosed with a stomach infection. Since the past 5-6 days he been having loose motions (abt times a day), smelly gas and some amount of vomitting. he has also lost her appetite . What could be the cause of this infection? he has a habit of sucking/licking anything he can get to his mouth? Could this be one of the causes? How can I make his get rid of the habit? I am so concerned and worried. Please help!!

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

It appears your child is in the 6-9 month age group. It is very common for infants to put everything in their mouth to explore. There is no way one can stop this habit. It shall gradually go with time when the child starts other activities and gets busy with them.

Regarding loose motions, I would suggest you get a stool routine examination and consult your doctor who will see if medicines are required. Ensure that the child takes a lot of liquids so that the child is not dehydrated.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter all the best....

Regards,

RKK

OBGYN Dr. Dr. Asra Ishtiaq Ahmed's  Response
Hello there,
Contaminated food and water are common causes of gut infection. Your baby is suffering from gastroenteritis. It is possible that the baby acquire infection due to improper hygiene. Proper handwashing is mandatory before giving feeds to your baby. Personal hygiene is equally important. After 5 months of age, babies start mouthing and they will lick or suck anything that is given to them. So that it quite natural and expected. When your baby grows up and sucking still persists beyond 4 years of age, especially thumb sucking, you need to address this problem seriously. But not at the moment. It may be part of play therapy in children and they can be left alone. Until then, keep a watch on your baby of the objects that come in his hand and make sure only clean items are handed over for the purpose of playing.
Take care.
