hi we live in XXX ,our baby has had a cold for about 2 weeks and over the last 3 days has developed a very nasty cough .we have taken him to a Doctor who has prescribed to liquid medicines which he takes in drops .It is 6 am in the morning and his cough seems more frequent ,his mother is also still breast feeding ,any advise for a worried parent ,thanks
Hi, you did not mention how old is your baby.Cold persisting for 2 weeks leading to a bad cough which is now progressive as you mentioned needs a thorough work up to rule out lower respiratory tract infection. A chest X ray with CBC is warranted at this stage. The baby needs to be started on an antibiotic course, preferably amoxycillin and clavulinic acid once the test are suggestive of underlying infection. Do specify which liquid medicines have been prescribed as it could be antibiotic drops to control infection. Yes breast feeding should be encouraged as it is the complete food for your baby and has anti infective properties. View this condition with caution till symptoms subside.
