Stopped Birth Control Pills. Pain In Wrist, Elbow, Finger, Achilles Tendon, Foot Pain. Hormones Causing Pains?

I am 52 years old. After taking control pills for 30 years (two pregnancies during) I stopped the pill in May 2013. Three weeks later I had very bad wrist pain, followed a few weeks later by elbow, finger, achilles tendon and foot pain. I have optimal calcium and Vitamin D levels, and my bone density is excellent. I have been tested for RA, Lyme, Lupus (all negative), and my thyroid levels are normal also. I am very athletic, not overweight and this all came on rather abruptly. Three years ago I tried to go off the pill and had similar symptoms. My gyn put me back on the pill and my symptoms resolved. I am wondering if my hormones are causing my pains??? My gyn does not want me on the pill anymore.

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

From the information you have provided, it seems these symptoms are closely linked to your efforts stopping the pills. This is however strange because this is not a commonly described observation in the medical community. But, presenting with identical symptoms on 2 different attempts makes this more likely than not.

I wouldn't want you on pills either because of the feared long term effects. I will suggest that you doctor tries weaning you off progressively, may be reducing the the dose or even making it every other month so that the body would slowly get used to the new state of being without this hormone. If you should tolerate this plan, ten progressively increasing the interval between intake and eventually stopping ay help us get out of this.

I hope this proves helpful and guides you. Feel free to ask me more questions if need be and I would gladly address them. I wish you well.
