Stopped Consuming Birth Control Pills, Brown Discharge. Advise?

Hi! I stopped taking my BC pills about three weeks ago. I did not stop mid-pack, I just simply did not continue with a new pack after the old one was gone. But just a few days ago, I started having some brown discharge. I was just curious if this could be from stopping the pill, or could it be implantation bleeding?

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

First of all, your age was very important to help guide you through a provisional diagnosis. But, as you are sexually active and on birth control pills, I am assuming you are in the reproductive age group, and so we shall accordingly consider a few possibilities.

Let me start by listing some of the most common causes of brown discharge for you:
-Premestrual (spotting that occurs prior to a period)
-Implantation bleed
-Hormonal imbalances
-Fibroids
-Ectopic pregnancy
-Miscarriage
-Normal in some women
-Polyps
-Around menopause
and a few other factors.

Before assuming any other causes, I would like to start by asking you to conduct a home pregnancy test using an early morning urine sample, as this would yield a most effective result. This should be conducted at least 20 days after the last sexual contact or on the first or second day of a missed period. This test might have to be repeated at least 2-3 times to confirm a result.

As you can see, the causes vary quite a bit. I would thus advise you to visit a doctor and get yourself examined and investigated thoroughly so we can rule out the worst and treat you if required. Early management is the most effective.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
