Strained Hamstring. Having Pain And Swelling. How Should I Rest?
I strained a hamstring about 7 weeks ago while training for a marathon. I ran the marathon 3 weeks ago and while all seemed well before hand I gradually got tighter and by 18 miles I was in a lot of pain with it. When originally strained it was at the upper part of the hamstring but during the marathon the pain was over the entire length and particularly behind my knee. Behind my knee was swollen the next morning. I haven't done any running since the marathon but have cycled. It feels fine when I walk but if I start to run even for a while I can feel it - not particularly painful but just I'm aware that its there. Any advice on how much longer I should rest it?
Ruling out a tear in the muscle would help. You need to see a Sports Medicine specialist who can guide you further. It would be wise to use analgesics(NSAIDs),avoid straining the muscle or starting any exercise till you have the pain. You may need physiotherapy and altered training schedule as suggested by the doctor.Ruling out damage to the knee and Bursitis will help.
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. Any unaccustomed activity will lead to soft tissue problems especially muscle strains and ligament sprains as they cant withstand the abnormal stresses upon them. Generally they resolve spontaneoulsy within 3 -4 weeks provided they are given adequate rest. I advise you to keep intermittant hot fomentation over the painful area so as to relax the strained muscles. Use some analgesic gel applications locally over the affected areas. Hope this helps
