Suffer From Fibromyalgia And Mild Arthritis. Swelling In The Back. Nerve Block Injection Suggested. Will It Cause Further Damage?

I suffer from fibromyalgia, as well as broke my L5 X2 and my Sacrum. They say I have mild arthritis from the L5 to S1. I have been through physical therapy, pool therapy, cortisone injection (Which sent me to the hospital in sever pain four hours later) and have done just about anything doctors I have seen have asked of me. I also have issues with when I over do something like cleaning my back swells at the sacrum to the point it causes the skin to become bruised and also causes me to loose feeling from my waist down my legs, I pee myself and also have had bowel movements because of the swelling. The latest pain clinic doctor I am seeing wants to do a nerve block injection to my back in the area of the sacrum. What are the possibilities that it can cause further damage to my back??

Hi !

Thank you for your query.

Dear madam ,

Looking into your problem , fibromyalgia is a difficult disorder to treat which leads to significant malaise and fatigue all the time . From what history you give it seems to me that you suffer from mechanical low back ache and it gets aggravated everytime when you bend while cleaning or doing some other work.

Regarding the epidural nerve block injection , it is a very safe procedure and brings significant pain relief . It is quite successful technique for the pain that does not respond to other measures. In my opinion you should give it a try as it may bring relief to your pain well the possibilty of side effects is always there but still the incidence is very less.

Hope you are satisfied with the answer.

If you have any further queries feel free to ask.

Wish you good health.

Take care.
