Suffering Bad Bouts Of Shortness Of Breath, Acid Reflux, GERD, X-ray Normal. Any Relation ?

yes, I have been suffering with bad bouts of shortness of breath over the last 16 months, which was when I gave up smoking, since giving up smoking I now have acid reflux, gerd. I have just had an xray and it is normal. the shortness of breath worries me, which I think makes it worse. can acid reflux or gerd cause shortness of breath, sometimes just carrying the washing upstairs.

Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM).

Yes acid reflux can cause shortness of breathe as it may cause microaspiration in lungs.

However as you used to smoke earlier, I will like to advise to get pulmonary function tests. Since xray can be normal in mild or initial chronic bronchitis or COPD. also get your Hemoglobin, ECG and blood pressure checked if these are all normal. Then it can be due to GERD only. For which you have to do is:
1.Avoid fatty meals
2. Dont lie down soon after meals for at least half hour
3.Take small and frequent meals, instead of full meals at a time
4. wear loose clothes
5. If you are overweight or obese do weight reduction with dieting and exercise
6. While sleeping keep your head end elevated by at least 30 degree.
7.take a proton pump inhibitor along with a prokinetic agent
