Suffering From GERD. Tried Zintac, Omeprezol, Home Remedies. Surgery Required?

I am 5'10" 210 lbs white male 45 YOA. Have been struggling with GERD, most nights about 6 hours after I eat it comes up into my throat, sometimes nose. I have to sleep upright, losing a ton of sleep. Started with OTC stuff like Zantac then dosed up to 3-75 mg pills, now even omeprezol (spelling) doesn't help much. I sometimes have to drink baking soda and water to stop the esophagus from burning! Heard milk+7-up may work never tried. I drink apple cider vinegar and regimented to 2tsp 2x daily it helps curb it. Worried about GERD surgery as it sounds painful. What should I do, I'm seriously concerned I have an underlying problem - or is this normal?

Hello dear,

Gastro esophageal reflux disease is caused by the reflux of acid from stomach to esophagus due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.
Management consists of:
1. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
2. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
3. Medical management- Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, etc. (which prevent acid formation in stomach) Metoclopramide can also be used but it has some side effects on long term usage
4. Surgical treatment- includes Fundoplication, done when medical measures fail, in which the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophageal sphincter to strengthen the sphincter and prevent acid reflux

So, it will be better to consult a Gastroenterologist & discuss regarding appropriate management plan.
There is no need to worry...you will be fine.

Wish you a good health & speedy recovery.
Thanks & Take care.
