Suffering From Nausea And Diarrhea. Dark Stools, Fever. Diabetic With A Lot Of Stress. History Of Cancer. Stomach Flu Or IBS?

My husband woke at 3 am with nausea and diarrhea . His stool was dark in color. He had a slight fever of 100. He is a type 1 diabetic and his blood sugars this am were 80 and later 126. He has also been under a lot of stress the past month as his mother has terminal cancer and is doing poorly. Wondering if he has the stomach flu vs. stress vs. IBS?

hi dear kershawm,
welcome to hcm.
Kindly specify if your husband has any pain abdomen. This would help in ruling out some specific organisms causing the symptomatology.
Kindly give him plenty of fluids orally. I would like to advice for ORS (Please purchase 4-6 sachets from the pharmacy. Use 1 sachet in 1 litre of water. Kindly make him drink the first litre in 4hrs followed by the second to be finished in next 6hours and so.)
U can give him Cap. Nutrolin B Plus twice daily for 5days. Kindly avoid spicy, oily, junk food & non vegetarian food. Use only well cooked items avoid any uncooked foods.
If the symptoms do persist, kindly get a stool examination done. Kindly check his HbA1c level as well in the lab.
Hope this will help for a speedy recovery.
Take care.

Hello
Nausea and dark stool might be caused by bleeding from stomach or duodenum ulceration.
Your husband may suffer from stress ulcer. Usually it is associated with stomach ache.
Diarrhea may be caused by stress as there is connection between bowel movement and nerves stimulation by stress.
There is also a chance that your husband has a stomach flu or other inflammation of gastrointestinal tract.
He should have blood tests performed. If there will be any hemoglobin loss it is advisable to perform endoscopy. If there will be any inflammation signs stool tests should be performed.
Colonoscopy might be necessary if all test wont tell what is wrong.
Take care
