hi doc. my husband is sufeering from shingles since 13/ 8 /13 the blisters have healed except for one on left chest but has severe pain cant move or there is lot of burning sensation even slight touch of his clothes can start the pain i need to know doctor has given him cap.:-. neugatia M 75mg ,tab Amitone cap. benin

Hi,

Herpes zoster also called shingle is a viral infection caused by VZV virus.

There clusters of vesicles in zosteriform pattern.

The disease affects the nerve fibres..thereby cause neuralgic pain..that would be unbearable pain.

Your husband is having severe pain even though there is healing in skin lesions.

His doctor would not have given steroids..which is actually given initial stage of the disease to prevent post herpetic neuralgia.

I always give steroids in tappering dose in my patients of herpes zoster from the beginning.

Anyways, I feel that he should be given steroids now for 2 to 3 weeks in tappering doses.

Antiviral like acyclovir and pain killers like tramadol are to be given.

Anxiolytic drugs like fluoxetin may be added.

If there is severe pain even after stoppage of steroids, pregabalin or gabapentin may be given.

He might be improved.
