Suggest An Effective Alternative For Amitriptyline

I am researching prescription medication options for nerve pain from a herniated disc. I have used gabapentin in the past, which was effective, but I had horrible time with withdrawal and would like to avoid using again at all cost! My doctor has prescribed amitriptoline (spelling?). Wondering what other options there are that won t be horrible to come off of once I have surgery?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern and would explain that Amitriptyline as well as Gabapentine may lead to withdrawal syndrome. But, if you gradually taper the dose, you can avoid withdrawal syndrome. Other possible treatment options would be Duloxetine and Pregabaline, which have less adverse effects compared to Amitriptyline. You should discuss with your doctor on the above treatment options.

Hope to have been helpful!
Kind regards,
Dr. Iliri
