Suggest Cause And Remedy For Blacking Out

My son is 23. He says he believes he was sitting on the bed when he blacked out and fell off the bed. He hit his head and put a 1.5-2 inch gash in it. It's not bleeding alot he has ice on it. He says he doesn't know what happened. I'm worried. He has no. Conditions, has quit smoking for about a week.
The not knowing what happened worries me. He has no insurance. What do you recommend? I think he should go to the dr.
