Suggest Cause For Rise In Sugar In Pregnant Woman?

I am 20 weeks pregnant and diabetic. I am on insulin and metformin er. My blood sugar levels after breakfast have been running high - 150 to 160 two hours after eating... I am also at the end of a cold but not taking any medication. Should I up my morning insulin (26R and 10NPH)?

Pregnancy is considered as diabetogenic condition. I will explain what I mean by this.
Those who are diabetic, have diabetes in them since the birth, but it is in latent phase; i.e. it does not show up till the body needs of insulin are met with. Any stress like infections, mental stress, pregnancy, etc. brings this latent diabetes to overt stage; i.e. the diabetes shows of with sugar in urine and raised blood sugar levels. It is likely that as the stress goes, the sugar levels may become normal again. It is very often seen so in pregnancy. After the delivery, the diabetes may again become latent only to show again after some period.
Now you are a known diabetic on insulin. Even while on insulin, your blood sugar has gone up. It clearly indicates that your insulin dose needs to be increased. However, please do not increase the insulin dose yourself. Let your physician calculate the dose and decide how much insulin you should take.
One more word of caution: the babies of diabetic women are usually born overweight, and still they behave like a premature babies. So you may require assistance during your delivery. Also you will have to take special care of your baby. The baby must be under the care of a neonatologist; i.e. specialized doctor for new born babies.
