I have neuropathy in my feet. Can t stand shoes to touch my feet. I have heard that vitamins b1, b6, & b12 may help. Is that correct. I am now taking 9 gabapentin, 300 mg. each , everyday. Can you give me any help? I have also been diagnosised with polycythemia vera. That was about the same time my feet started hurting. Can you help me??

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query.
Peripheral Neuropathy is a condition caused by damage to the peripheral nervous system [most commonly seen in diabetic patients]. Another possibility could be nerve compression in spine due to disc bulge. Change your diet and remove inflammatory foods such as citrus fruits, dairy products and wheat that may aggravate the condition. Simultaneously increase your intake of potassium and calcium-rich foods such as bananas and avocados and green leafy vegetables Vitamin B12 is important in the maintenance of health and normal functioning of the nerve tissue and deficiency of it can lead to numbness. You can increase B12 level by taking meat and fish, or you can take tab methylcobalamine . To have better relief, drugs like gabapentin are helpful. But these are prescription medicines and are best if taken under the guidance of your neurologist. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
