Good morning,
Creatine is found in the muscle tissue of animal foods. Can you please tell me the diet order you were looking at?
Creatine can be lowered by cutting back on or eliminating meat protein. Do not consume high
carbohydrate foods with meat as the carbohydrates increase the absorbtion of the creatine in the meat.
Knowing other lab values would help, along with your husband's diagnosis along with any symptoms and the diet order, I can assist you in a more accurate manner. These include BUN,
creatinine clearance, sodium . . .
Your husband's level of 2.0 is something to pursue. Levels above 4 mg/dl are considered critical and levels that are high could be due to a multitude of factors of which
kidney function is the most worrisome.
Other causes of elevated creatine are having your blood tested after eating a large "meat" meal, other medical conditions or even medications can cause elevation in creatine.
Please write back Jane after the other tests come back and provide us with the information I requested and I will have a better idea of the type of diet best for the condition. Ask your doctor as well specifically what diet you should be on after the additional test results return.
Thank you for visiting HCM. Please don't panic. I look forward to you writing again. Sincerely, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
