Suggest Dietary Plan For Avascular Necrosis

I understand Avascular necrosis invloves a problem wiht blood flow to the bone. My husband has AVN in both hips, but the left is beginning to collapde and he is looking at surgery in January. Both hips are very painful, down to his knees.

1) Because this has to do with circulation, I would like to know if there are any particular dietary changes that can help with the inflamation as well as the circulatory problems. We recently began juicing (primary fruits and vegetable juices, including those high in protien) and have begun to add fish and other protiens into our diet. He has lost 28 lbs (from 172 to 144) and the reduced weigh alone has helped somewhat.

2) A friend recommended "Chelation" and gave us a book. I have just started reading it and plan to finish. From what i have read to-date, it would appear that this also has to do wiht purifying the blood, which leeads me to think that diet (particularly the right juices, and continued reduction/ommision of bad fats, etc) would be of benefit in repairing the problem.

I thank you for your help/advice!

Welcome to HCM,
You are a brave woman! There is no universally accepted diet approach for this condition. However, what you are already doing makes sense. You have probably already made certain that your husband does not consume any alcohol in any form at any time ever.

Next, I am thinking that if one of my patients presented to me with your question, I would also add fish oil to the diet to thin the blood and to benefit the heart and circulatory system.

I would cut down on meat proteins and focus on more vegetable proteins. You probably have already switched to lean cuts of meat, but we want to lower the "sludge" in the blood so cleaner eating is the idea.

Gradually increase his fiber, particularly water-soluble, as this will help with many things, regularity (needed so toxins do not build up) and water solubles cleanse the fats/cholesterol from the blood slowly. Remember, you must add an additional 2 cups of pure reverse osmosis water to the regular 8 glasses per day.

I cannot comment on chelation. I see no literature on it and AVN.

To soothe you a bit, hip surgery has advanced over the years and many places are doing it on an out-patient basis with patients up and walking in 6 hours!

Oh and many people forget about vitamin K. You need that in addition to Calcium and D for bone function but beware if on warfarin or a clotting drug.
Vitamin K is a vitamin where consistency is more important than getting it on a variable level day to day.

I would also look for an Integrative/Functional Medicine physician and/ or Registered Dietitian to work with you and your husband on an individualized quality of life care plan to work on this problem. Healthy Regards, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
