Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I recently have a very bad gout attack. My doctor prescribed me with allopurinol, which she told me I have to take continuously. I know all medications have side effects. I am already taking few medications for my diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. How long do I have to take it?
Hello There was a gouty attack and now prescribed ALLOPURINOL . Normal serum uric acid level is 3-7 mg/dl. While urine uric acid excretion of > 800 mg / day on regular diet in the absence of drugs suggests over production and gout . Here as you mentioned that you are taking drugs for , diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol . I want to tell you that certain drugs like ASPIRIN & CYTOTOXICs also causes hyperurecemia ( simulates as gout symptoms ). However , if there is gout , you can take it till your acid level reach within normal limit . 2nd point is that certain drugs like ampicillin amoxicillin, dicumarol cyclophosphamide also interacts with allopurinol . So either write down about medicine , which you are taking or consult your treating doctor. Hope this will help you.
