Im 39 year old male. im 5'-10" tall and weigh 240 lbs. I lift weights 3-4 days a week and always do a cardio workout. My energy levels are dropping and dont want to go to gym when I need to go. What can I do to boost my energy levels and feel younger?

Hello - You know you are fighting an uphill battle? As we age, this happens naturally, but it sounds like you have a good work out program going to counteract the age-related decline in energy levels. How do you feel about your weigh? It looks quite high for me so what is your % body fat? I am feeling you need to take some of that weight off to help with boosting your energy.

As far as energy boosters, there are some I could suggest after medical clearance from a doctor to assure me you are not anemic (which would make you tired) or that you have some other problem not yet discovered. When was your thyroid and lipids checked last? I need a fasting sugar on you, a TSH, a fasting lipid profile, a blood pressure and clearance to take vitamins.

After that, you may consider the following at your own risk, but I feel they are safe: Resveratrol, 150 mg/day (male obese clinical trials) is used for a variety of health issues - keeping the heart healthy, longevity, weight loss, energy; Green Tea is thermogenic and will raise your metabolism while giving you more energy, especially if you combine it with caffeine. If you have heard the rumor about green tea and liver cancer I will explain before you ask. The number of humans were unacceptably small at 19 and mostly women. It has not been replicated. Forget about it unless we see more convincing evidence; Ginseng Tea; Hot chili peppers; Coffee or Green Coffee Beans; and yogurt with active cultures. Eat a balanced diet including getting adequate calcium, magnesium, vitamin D lots of vegetables , fresh fruits, oat fiber, low saturated fat, get rid of trans fats; get rid of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Start with these suggestions.

Let me know your progress and any specific ways I may help. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
