Suggest Exercises That Can Help Treat Sciatica Pain

I have spinal stenosis. I had 4 spinal injections with steroid. It did not help. My doctor wants to do laminectomy. I would like to postpone surgery if I can. I am doing physical therapy twice a week. For the past 3 days I have pain in my buttocks that goes down all the way to my legs and foot. I think I have sciatic.I have been on Celebrex for years because of degenerative joint disease. I had Total knee replacement, a rod in my left femur and I had cervical discectomy 6 years ago. My question is : is there any other exercises I can do to help this new sciatic pain.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In cases of exacerbated sciatica best thing to do in the first days is rest and use of NSAID drugs. After some improvement of the symptoms, physical therapy or exercises such McKenzie exercises that can be done at home may help in further improvement. In cases of symptoms worsening surgery remains the gold standard.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
