Suggest Generic Alternative For Percocet

My pain management doctor told me yesterday that he was going to order Percocet for me, but I came home with hydrocodone 5- 325 mg. acetaminophen. That s not generic for Percocet is it? I think it is generic for Vicodin, because I told him Vicodin doesn t work with me, it keeps me up all night long, and that is exactly what I am doing now, staying awake all night long. Doctor, do you know what is the generic for the Percocet that he told me he was ordering for me? Thank you for your assistance, Deborah F.

Firstly, Percocet contains a combination of Acetaminophen and Oxycodone. Oxycodone is an opioid/narcotic analgesic while Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of oxycodone. Percocet is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.

The drug that you have now is a analgesic combo from combination of Opioid and Acetaminophen, but it contains Hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Yes, it's the generic name or the active ingredients of Vicodin. While, Percocet contains combination of Oxycodone and Acetaminophen.

Actually, Oxycodone and Hydrocodone are both opioid pain relievers. But Oxycodone (peak plasma in 1.5 to 5 HT) has faster pharmacological reaction than hydrocodone (5 to 16 HT peak plasma). If you need the generic alternative of Percocet, you should look for the drugs that contain Oxycodone/Acetaminophen. It's better to consult to your treating doctor about that, since it should be prescribed by doctor only.
