Suggest Less Addictive Medication For HIV And HIV Related Neuropathic Pain

Hello, I have HIV and HIV related neuropathic pain. I had previously been prescribed codeine phosphate 30mg (2-3) 3 times a day and 5mg diazepam 2 times per days. I hae recently been relocated to Cambridge and have no meds and I am trying to find another doctor. The withdrawal has been horrendous. Am I likely to be prescribed the same meds? Is there anything less addictive? Many thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Neuropathic pain can be reduced by taking medicines like Combiflam, Naproxen, etc. Since you have history of HIV you should continue to take the medicines prescribed for HIV. You are suggested to get clinically examined for the neurological problem by a neurologist. Get NCV test, nerve biopsy and imaging tests done so that the nerve damage can be controlled.

If diabetic, control your blood sugar at all cost. You can take food rich in vitamin B1, B6, B12, folic acid or supplements to prevent further nerve damage. Take citrus fruits, berries, grains, nuts, etc to boost immunity. Take anti-inflammatory food to get rid of pain. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
