Suggest Remedies For Swelling In Legs

Hi, Good Afternoon Dr. My dad has suffered this paralysis stroke since January 14. His age is 73. Now gradually he has started walking using walking stick. But I have noticed his affected leg as well as his unaffected leg both swollen. Please suggest treatment for this. Secondly, his affected fingers on his hand are folded. We try hard to straigten fingers, it s only for a minute. Then again it goes folded. Please suggest treatment for this. thanks and regards, Jyothi

Greetings Jyothi.
I am glad that i am able to guide you right to overcome your Dad's discomfort.

It's unfortunate that your dad had stroke attack but happy to hear that he is recovering slowly back to normal.

First of all understand that swollen leg can have many reasons viz.,prolonged immobilisation, injury, local infection of leg/elsewhere above leg, blood vessels problem, even a problem of organ failure, much more..etc.,

So my opinion is that, it is necessary to identify the exact problem your father is suffering by a physical examination, done by a doctor, who may ask your father to take investigation required for the diagnosed condition & finally treat him accordingly.

Meanwhile ask your father to wear Leg stockings for affected leg & elevate his leg to about 30-45 degree above with help of pillow underneath leg while lying down/sleeping.

As for as affected fingers[for stroke as a whole], repeated EXERCISE viz., PHYSIOTHERAPY only can make a person become normal after such attack. For that either you can approach for help from the treated hospital/any other well known hospital/any Physiotherapy clinic/a Physiotherapist.

Last but not least, take care of your Father very well particularly at this stage.Check to that he's taking medication properly in dose & at right time.Avoid getting complication out of irregular medication. Visit the doctor not only for review alone but little earlier before review specially to find out reason for swollen leg & start treatment for that at the earliest.

Note:
Finally it's just a guidance & not a definitive treatment as i haven't seen your father personally.I don't know exactly what your father condition is unless i see him personally. So visit a doctor.

Hope i guided you right & it helped.
