Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I do have the condition diverticulitus. Over the last 13 years since diagnosis I have experience different bowel problems, and could live with them. Recently over the last 2 months I have been experiencing smelly flactulence and stools smelling of ammonia at times. I often have bad night's sleep due to low lumbar fused vertibrae,or maybe the bowel. Need advise help.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Since you have already been diagnosed as diverticular disease 13 years ago, you must have been advised about the diet, when to take medications and all the precautions that you have to take which you should follow stringently. Smelly flatulence and ammonia smelling stool indicate intestinal infection that can cause problems with diverticulitis too. Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation: Consult a Gastroenterologist for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations of stool, blood and urine. Colonoscopy helps further in proper diagnosis. CT scan if diverticulitis is thought about. A long course of proper antibiotics, metronidazole and probiotics should help you solve the present problems and any further management to be done as per the findings.
