Suggest Remedy For Gag Refluxs Of Dentures In RA Patients

1 year ago I was diagnosed with RA. I have worn an upper denture for about eighteen yrs with little problem. With the help of prednisone and cimzia injections I am learning to deal with the RA but am finding that my denture has changed it's fit from time to time and have developed a gag reflex because of it. This problem comes an goes. I tried a realignment an still have the same results? Any suggestions?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Firstly, there is no relation between the gag reflex you are experiencing and RA you are suffering from. It is possible that the denture loosens in mouth over time as the bone of maxillary arch bearing denture in case of upper dentures reduces in size over time changing the measurements with which the denture was made making it difficult to wear and retain in mouth.

In addition, the gag reflex you experience may occur if the posterior or back border of dentures extends too far in the palate where it touches the soft palate making you gag. This may also happen due to changed measurements of the maxillary ridge and palate area where upper denture sits.

As eighteen years has passed and you are wearing same denture, it is time you need to change the denture and go for new denture with new measurements. There are many new techniques that have developed in last 18 years that can make you more comfortable with the denture and help to tolerate them better. You should visit a Prosthodontist (dentist who is expert in making dentures) for the new denture fabrication.

I hope this answer helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
