Hi, my father is suffering from edema as told by the doctors. But when he started taking Lasix , he had severe cramping & then the doctor reduced the dosage. My father was kept under the strict diet but last to last saturday he went to a party & had non veg & alcohol. Since then my father is not feeling well. He has extreme leg pain & feeling very weak. He is not able to get up from the bed. All day he sleeps & then when he gets up, he asks for the pain killer. Now, we changed our doctor & he asked us to stop taking Lasix & gave us Dytol. Earlier his sugar was high but now its under control but BP is high now. He had diabetes & BP but it used to increase only when he eats lots of sweets or is in tension. Now his BP is also high. Doctor please suggest me what to do? When will his leg pain get over? Or should we start with someother medication? He had sweeling in his legs but now he has no swelling in his legs. He is feeling very weak. Doctor please suggest something?
If your father is hypertensive and a diabetes patient then he must completely avoid alcohol. Alcohol not only worsens diabetes management but also raises BP. Moreover, have you got his HbA1C test done recently? If no, then you must get it done to see how well his diabetes is under control. Does he monitor blood sugar at home? It is advisable to use a glucometer device to monitor blood sugar levels at home. Does he have any complications like peripheral vascular disease (PVD) or neuropathy? If he has PVD, then you must consult a cardiologist because leg pain, weakness and swelling in legs could be due to poor blood supply to the legs. Also if he has neuropathy or nerve damage, alcohol consumption might have resulted in worsening the symptoms of neuropathy leading to pain in legs.
Note: Severe leg cramps on taking lasix which is a diuretic result due to loss of potassium from the body. In such a case you need to give potassium rich foods like coconut water, fruits like oranges, sweet lime, lemon juice etc.
Hope this information will guide you in getting the right treatment for your father.
