Suggest Remedy For Residual Barium Post Gastrointestinal Test
I had an upper GI test two weeks ago and was scheduled to have a CT Scan, but they were not able to do this because of the huge amount of barium in my colon. I am drinking water, have had seven laxatives in the past two weeks and have had several bowel movements. Would this cause health problems? Would an enema help?
Barium in the colon comes out with every bowel movement. You don't need any enema if your bowel movements are regular. As you have taken laxatives too, that should be enough to clear your colon. Taking laxatives won't cause health problems but sometimes they may cause diarrhea and dehydration. So please be vigilant. You don't need to worry much about barium as it will come out in stools.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
