Hi I have hard dime sized bumps under my skin on my left arm. First I had one on my elbow now I have one on my upper arm and I think one by my armpit. They are sore to the touch and my skin is red. I have had boils before and this is not the same. I have had a cold and sore throat for a week.

Hello,

You had cold and sore throat for a week and thereafter you you have hard, sore bumps under the skin on the left arm. Lumps under the skin are very common and can have a range of causes. In many cases, they go away without treatment. It can be dermatofibroma, can be due to insect bites. They are harmless and do not require any treatment.

However, you can take antihistamine, to reduce soreness and inflammation. If the appearance bothers you, you can get it clinically examined by a dermatologist, it can be removed surgically but may leave scar. If you opt to only remove the top part, there’s a good chance the lump will return over time.

The other medical conditions that can have similar symptoms are ganglion cyst, it disappears without treatment; Epidermoid cysts, may require to get drained, removed by surgically. If tumor is suspected, your treating doctor will ask you to get a biopsy done. Then your treatment will depend on the pathology detected and if it is benign or malignant. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
