I hyperextended my knee 5 days ago. It has been swollen very bad the past few days. Last night my big toe started hurting with extreme pain and still hurts this morning. My foot is also swollen. Any suggestions before I go to the emergency room. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The commonest cause of swelling feet, ankles & leg is obesity, water retention due to excess salt intake, deep vein thrombosis, OA, RA, venous insufficiency etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined, get blood & Imaging test done & treated at the earliest. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. Presently cut on salt intake, maintain low BMI, do walking & exercises. For pain take Naproxen or Ibuprofen, one SOS when needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
