Suggest Safe Reduction Protocol For Metoprolol

Dr. Mintz, my wife had a stroke caused by a benign tumor in her left atrium and after a successful surgery was prescribed Metoprolol 12.5 mg twice daily then had to increase to 12.5 mg every 6 hrs. Since that time (Aug 11th 2014) she has been trying to wean herself off the meds. My question to you is what is a safe reduction protocol for this drug ? can it be quartered safely or simply halved ? It comes as a 25mg pill

It would be best to discuss any kind of safe reduction protocol with her doctor. The metoprolol may be being used for a specific condition related to her heart that continues despite the surgery. You need to be sure about this before taking her off it. If it's no longer necessary, the doctor could help you with the reduction, prescribing lesser doses as needed. Check with the doctor before taking any chances. Hope this helps.
