i am suffering from epilepsy since 2001 july and under medication but in 2004 as per doctors advice i reduced the intake of phenotoin sodium from 300 mg to 200 mg and in two months time i got the seizure again,so i am back on 300 mg since then and in 2007 where the availabitlity of drugs in saudiarabia was in question i am forced to reduce it for couple of weeks and i got it again. since then i make sure that i am on 300 mg.
Now i am in Canada and here the medicine is highly regulated i cant get to keep them in stock the pharmacist dispenses only 90 days and i have to wait till the week before to replenish. How long i need to be on this drug and is there a way to reduce it or completely get rid of it
Since you have epilepsy since 2001 and you had recurrence of seizure twice on decreasing the dose of phenytoin. Its likely that you might need to take medicines for very long time or life long. But you should feel lucky that your seizures are controlled by one medicine only. There are few other treatment modalities like epilepsy surgery in few selected cases only, depending on the cause of seizure. For that you need to discuss with your neurologist about such option in your case.
