I was playing basketball with someone I didn t know, the person got a cut and some of their blood got on my finger. I immediately wiped the blood off with a shirt but didn t have water close by to wash it off, also I can t remember if I had any hangnails on my finger but it s a possibility, what are the chances of contracting hiv like this?

Hi,

Contact of infected persons blood/body secretions to skin with cut / (nail hang outs as you cold have) has a high chance of getting infection. Here you do not know about the infection of HIV in the person you were playing that makes the issue more difficult to tackle. In such case you can try to trace the person and know is HIV status.

If he is found to be positive or he could not be traced. You should go for Elisa test to diagnose HIV after the window period of two weeks after exposure. The window period can be extended for few months even in such case be in touch with the doctor and get periodic ELISA for 12 months followed by Western blot test as per advise given that time.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
