Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
When using a wedge pillow or other device to raise the head of your bed to help with GERD, if I put the wedge between the mattress and box spring, can I still use a pillow on top of the mattress like usual, or does it make you bend unnaturally and therefore still cause reflux? From what I've read, you can sleep on your back or your side only, with a wedge underneath. What if I'm usually only comfortable sleeping on my stomach? Do you know if the product called Contour Mattress Genie works as well as it looks?
In GERD, there is reflux of the gastric content into the esophagus and the oral cavity, so it is adviced that your posture in sleep should be such that your head may be at a higher place than your stomach so that the gastric contents may not come into upper esophagus and oral cavity because of gravity. So you can use the pillow in both the ways you have mentioned. Sleeping on your stomach will increase abdominal pressure and will lead to increase reflux.
