Suggest Treatment For UTI When On Treatment For Dementia
My grandmother in india has symptoms of dementia (memory loss, confusion, moood swings, etc) but has also had almost a consistent uti for past year. Her gp says that he will not treat her for this as she cannot take/ reacts to antibiotics for the infection including low grade prophylactic antibiotics, and as she wears nappies she will naturally have a level of infection. In the U.K we've been told such infections can cause dementia like signs and it is essential that this is addressed, at least as a first port of call. What can i do or suggest?
Thank for appraching Healthcare magic team. First of all your grand mother's uti has to be considered. Go for a proper culture and sensitivity before taking antibiotics if the UTI has been persisting inspite of treatment. If still it is not responding, then prophylactic antibiotics have to be given. One more thing to be considered in elderly females is frequent urination because of atrophic urethritis along with vaginitis which has to be shown to a gynecologist. Most of the antibiotics do not usually react to the meds given for dementia. There is no evidence that dementia in elderly is triggered by infections. Kindly get back for further queries. Thank you.
