Suggest Treatment For A Blackened Toe Caused By A Long Walk

My second toe on my right foot turned black under the toe nail suddenly after a 3 mile walk. The tip of the to swelled a little and was sore for a few days. It is not sore anymore, but my toe is still black under the nail. What s wrong and what should I do? XXXX

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I think the toe has been injured during long walking. Should soak in warm water with soda bicarbonate for about 10 mins. Then, rinse with warm water following by cold water. Apply alternating warm and cold compresses locally to disperse the clogged blood (black part). Do repeat several times during the day. If the toe bed is red, then, should apply a combination of Tripple antibiotic ointment with hydrocortisone cream for at least 1 week once a day. You can send a photo of the toe nail to me for any other specific advice. If still no improvement, should consult further with your caring doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
