Suggest Treatment For Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma In The Base Of Skull
Hi. My dad is affected by an adenoid cystic carcinoma located in the skull base (originally the tumor was located in the nasopharynx and is extending itself, so as to the tumor measures almost 7cm*6cm*7cm now). He was already treated by 75 grays radiotherapy in 2006, as well as carbo-taxol chemotherapy, and imatinib 14months ago, without results. He s currently under tamoxifen and is seemed to be stabilized. Can you tell me your opininon about what kind of treatment you may suggest if you were his doctor.
The only curative treatment of adenoid cystic carcinoma anywhere in the body is surgical removal and then radiotherapy or chemotherapy if required. Since you have not been offered surgery, i assume that either the tumor cannot be taken out or the patient is not fit for such a major surgery. I hope an experienced cancer surgeon has had a look. If that is the case then you have more or less reached the end of the road as far as treatment is concerned. There is not much else to offer. The treatment from here on will be completely symptomatic.
