Suggest Treatment For Bulged Stomach

My husband is 73 years old and over the years his stomach has gradually filled out. He's fairly active putting up sheds, digging the garden etc, He seems fairly fit even though he smokes about 5 cigarettes a day. We do not over indulge in eating, usually having either abacon sandwich, or porridge, boiled egg for breakfast and then having a meal round about 4 o'clock and then nothing else but a cup of tea and a biscuit before bedtime.

His father became the same shape and was pretty healthy right up until he died aged 93.

Is it a genetic thing?

Hello and thank you for your question. It is partially genetic and partly from eating too many calories and too much carbohydrate. Abdominal fat is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. If he wants to get thinner around the abdomen doing abdominal strengthening exercises and cutting back on sweets and carbohydrates (bread, pasta, potatoes, rice) would be helpful. A diet with more fresh fruits and vegetables and let fats and starches would be healthier. However, with his genetics he may live a long life without making changes, it is up to him if he wants to make the changes or not. Best wishes to you and thanks for using HCM.
