Hello,

Heavy bleeding during periods can lead to iron deficiency anemia if you won’t balance nutritional intake. It is commonly observed in patients with iron deficiency that they tend to eat pencils. But its not beneficial rather it can cause obstruction of the gut, humans can’t digest it.

You are probably eating it because of nutritional deficiency, I would suggest you see a gynaecologist and talk about it to her regarding heavy bleeding during periods, as she is the best to guide you with appropriate medicines if required. she will suggest you nutritional supplements containing emulsions or tablets that might help you in your current issue.

Also, consult a nutritionist so that you will be consuming enough nutrients to avoid any kind of deficiency.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
